    Galerie Kandlhofer is thrilled to join the line-up for the 2024 edition of viennacontemporary, showing a international, female group presentations of new works by Nadia Ayari (TUN), Frauke Dannert (DE), Acaye Kerunen (UG), Hannah Perry (UK) and Alicia Viebrock (DE).

    Nadia Ayari

    Nadia Ayari (b. 1981, raised in Tunis) lives and works in New York. Ayari moved to the U.S. in 2000 and received a B.A. in art history from Boston University, an M.F.A. in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and a certificate of fine arts from Brandeis University.
     
    Her distinctive paintings are characterised by a striking balance between abstraction and narration. Generally Ayari produces series of works which focus on a select number of repeated objects like the flower, branch and leaf which are inspired by her native landscape. These forms become characters in her paintings, taking on the contours of human disembodiment, or another shape isolated from nature. Her compositions tackle narratives of survival while the thick, methodically applied oil-paint give the protagonists and the plastic space they inhabit substantial skin, making them physically relatable.

    Frauke Dannert

    Frauke Dannert (b.1979 in Herdecke, Germany) lives and works at Cologne. Dannert studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and at Goldsmiths College in London. 
     
    The genesis of Dannert’s practice lies in her interest in the architectural space and the medium of collage. These collages manifest themselves on paper, wall paintings, carpet inlays, curtains, projections, films and photographs. Through this she dissects architecture, examining it as to its sculptural potential, pointedly heightening particular features or else subverting preconceived structural assumptions. By altering the scale and shapes of the building materials depicted, Dannert produces creations that oscillate between the organic and the architectonic, illusion and reality.

    Acaye Kerunen

    Acaye Kerunen (b. Kampala, Uganda) is a multidisciplinary performance and installation artist, storyteller, writer, actress and activist based in Kampala, Uganda.
     
    Her multimedia installations incorporate materials— including banana fibre, raffia, reeds, and palm leaves—grown, harvested, dyed, and woven in Uganda, and these works often meditate on the intricacies of natural systems and the impact of climate change. Enactments of labour and emancipation are also central to her work, which has been exhibited at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022; Afriart Gallery in Kampala in 2021; and the Nyege Nyege Ugandan culture and music festival in 2018. The artist holds a BSc in Mass Communication from the Islamic University in Mbale. Kerunen lives and works in Kampala.

    Hannah Perry

    Hannah Perry (b.1984, Chester, England) lives and works in London. Perry received her BA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London and her MA from The Royal Academy of Art, London.
     
    Hannah is a British artist working mainly in installation, sculpture, print and video. Continuously generating and manipulating materials (footage, sound clips, images and objects) Perry develops a sprawling network of references, carefully exploring personal memory in today’s hyper- technological society whilst bending back the systems of representation via hyperactive distribution. Perry is guided by music or speech, repetition, focalisation and deceleration, revealing the strength of our personal investment in images of the illusory (youth, power, sex, taste, lifestyle) as well as the prescriptive nature of these desires.

    Alicia Viebrock

    Alicia Viebrock (* 1986 in Munich) lives and works in Cologne. In 2017, the artist completed her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a master student under Herbert Brandl. 
     
    Viebrock's works are characterized by a sweeping, energetic brushstroke that suggests movement and rhythm and represents an act of dynamised painting. The paintings are created by building a composition, which is brought onto the canvas by means of a white preliminary drawing and is supplemented and continued by an intuitive gesture, which often means an enormous physical effort. The virtuoso application of paint is dominated by a light-flooded coloristic and oscillates between flowing and set, between permeable and impasto. With the strongly expressive, gestural expression of her works, Viebrock joins the tradition of American abstract expressionism, which was decisively influenced by artists such as Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler. As with Mitchell and Frankenthaler, the spontaneous artistic gesture plays an important role in Viebrock's work as an expression of individual freedom. In an autonomous act of painting, Viebrock has created a series of vibrant and tension-filled works that allow the viewer to immerse himself in the pulsating world of colour created by the artist.
